Airspeed indicator measure the difference between total air pressure and static air pressure. The total air pressure (metering pressure) is taken from a ram air probe on the outside of the aircraft at the airstream’s stagnation point and passed on to the airspeed indicator via tubes. A second connection for static pressure is possible. The measuring equipment is an open diaphragm capsule with best elastic attributes; Hysteresis (difference between feed and return line) and elastic after-effects are negligible. The diaphragm capsule is pressurized by total air pressure and static air pressure. The change of form of the diaphragm that results from this pressurization is transferred to the needle via a gear- and lever mechanism. To mark the various operating ranges of the airplane coloured markings can be applied on the airspeed indicators scale, for example normal operating range: green, caution range: yellow, range for extended flaps: white, maximum speed: red. The devices are not susceptible to vibrations and concussions.
Designed especially for gliding, indication of airspeed on a spiral 510-degree scale. Increments for low and high speed are very far apart to get most accurate indication and good readability in the speed range that is most important.
