Legal basis

Austria: The Civil Aerodrome Operating Regulations 2024 (ZFBO 2024), § 31(4), stipulates that ground vehicles which are not already conspicuously painted in accordance with § 31(3) must display a red-and-white chequered marking or flag on both sides and on the roof of the vehicle, with a minimum side length of 45 cm. EASA: The high-contrast red-and-white design complies with the EASA requirements for the marking of vehicles at aerodromes in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 139/2014, Annex IV (Part-ADR.OPS), ADR.OPS.B.080. This stipulates that vehicles and other moving objects on the movement area must be marked with a conspicuous, high-contrast marking. The relevant EASA Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC1 ADR.OPS.B.080(a)) explicitly state that red and white is a permissible colour combination for chequered vehicle flags.
